Mete Gazoz: The 22-year-old Who Won Turkey’s First Ever Gold in Archery at the Olympic Games

Born in 1999, in Istanbul, Turkey, Mete Gazoz is a professional archer who competes in team and individual recurve events. Coming from a family of archers, Gazoz began archery at the age of 3. In less than 10 years, he had made his international debut.

Achievements

Gazoz’s medal record runs long. He made his debut at the 2013 World Archery Youth Championships, where he finished second in the team event. In 2015, his team won a silver medal at the Cadet Youth Cup. he won silver medals in team events at the European Championships and the Junior World Indoor Championships in 2016. 2017-2019 were extremely successful for Gazoz as he won a medal at each competition he entered. He won the bronze medal in the Junior Mixed Team event at the 2017 World Archery Youth Championships.

In 2018 alone, Gazoz won a silver in the team event at the Junior World Indoor Championships, a gold at the Meditteranean Games team event, and a total of 2 bronze, 2 silver (in team events), and one gold medal (individual) at the 2018 Archery World Cup. he also won the European Youth Championships individual event in 2018. In 2019, Gazoz once again won individually at the World cup and took home 2 bronze and 1 silver in team events, according to Wikipedia

In 2018 he was named World Archery Male Recurve Athlete of the Year. He also received the Breakthrough Athlete of the Year award. In 2019, he was the flagbearer of Turkey at the opening ceremony of the European Games, writes the IOC

Mete Gazoz won gold in men’s individual archery at Tokyo Olympic Games, bringing Turkey’s first-ever Olympic medal in archery. As of June 2021, Gazoz is ranked at world number.2 in archery. His historic achievement at his Olympic debut is a testament to his passion and dedication to his sport and sets an example to the next generation of athletes worldwide.
